“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Colossians 3:1-2
What does it mean to set your mind on things above? We don’t want to be so heavenly minded we are of no earthly good, right? Paul tells us to set our hearts and minds on things above. A few days ago I wrote about the heart and things that pass through it. (February 26) In light of our hearts, I take Paul’s words to mean that we need to focus on forgiveness and treasures of the kingdom like salvation, hope in eternity, Jesus’ work on the cross, joy in the Lord, peace for living, thanksgiving and listening to the Holy Spirit. We also can focus on love for God and others, purity in our walk and obedience to His Word in our thoughts and attitudes. Setting our minds on Christ keeps us focused on heaven, Christ’s return, those things in life that have eternal value and lifts us up out of the ‘pit’ of anguish, despair, turmoil, hurt and sin that are so prevalent in this world. Look up today and see if that does not help you have a more positive attitude filled with hope and joy in the Lord.

Have you ever considered what God looks for in us? In the book of 1Samuel we read the story of Saul being taken from power by God for his disobedience. He did not do as God instructed and God gave the ‘kingship’ to another. Saul still remained in power but the future reign of his descendants was ended. The prophet Samuel was instructed to go and anoint the new one chosen by God to lead His people. Samuel did not know it was the young shepherd David that was to be chosen. He went to see the sons of Jesse and started with the oldest son. He was given these instructions. “But he LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance,
What does God see when He looks at your heart? Scripture tells us the ‘heart’ holds many things and reveals our true intent. The heart is: where you store those things you treasure Matthew 6:21, the source of evil thoughts Matthew 15:19-20, the place forgiveness starts Matthew 18:35, the place love for God and man begins Matthew 22:37-38, the home of belief Romans 10:9, the place where we hold our anguish and pain 2Corinthians 2:4, the home of purity 1Timothy 1:5, 2Timothoy 2:22, the center of all our thoughts and attitudes Hebrews 4:12, the place of obedience Psalm 119:34, and a place that is known by God Psalm 139:23-24. “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Which of these heart places do you need to offer to God today with thanksgiving? Which of these places do you need to ask for forgiveness and healing ?
