God Delight Ends with Blessing

When we obey God, He delights in us. Joshua reminded rebellious Israel that the land God was bringing them to was because of his delight in them. Number 4:8  If the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey.” If they would just persist in following God and trusting in Him, they would receive what He had promised. Likewise in Deuteronomy 30:9 Moses reiterates this, “The Lord your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your cattle and in the fruit of your ground. For the Lord will again take delight in prospering you, as he took delight in your fathers,” God wants to bless us with His best, but what is the cost? 1 Samuel 15:22 nails the answer, “Do you think all God wants are sacrifices—    empty rituals just for show? He wants you to listen to him! Plain listening is the thing,  not staging a lavish religious production. Not doing what God tells you.” The Message translation makes it clear that God wants obedience over any show of allegiance or pretense. The ESV and NIV use the word delight in this verse, “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,  as in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.”

What delights the Lord God enough that He would shower them and us with blessings? God desires obedience. Those that follow Him will be blessed. God made this promise to Abraham when He called him to follow him in Genesis 12:2-3 “And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.Abraham obeyed God and went where God directed. The promise was that all of the earth- all of us would be blessed through him. We see this fulfilled in Christ. Galatians 3:14 “so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.” Ephesians 1:3 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,” We see through Abraham that obedience lead to blessings in his life and then into ours. Christ is the ultimate blessing and through Him we can be a blessing to others as we walk in obedience.

Through today’s scriptures we see that obedience (listening and doing what God desires) brings blessing and blessings are a way God shows His delight in us. How are you doing with your obedience to Him? Do you search the scriptures for the way He desires that you live? Do you pray and ask the Holy Spirit’s guidance in your daily life? Proverbs 10:22 says “The blessing of the Lord makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.” You will know when you are blessed by God as His blessings make us rich- body, soul and mind and there is no sorrow or regret with the blessing.

Who Told You?

Who told you about Jesus and the salvation He offered? Was it your parents, grandparents, a friend or neighbor? Or maybe you were reading God’s Word and knew in your heart that what God said was true and believed. Scripture tells us that believing comes from hearing Romans 10:17 “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.’ Our promise today comes from Genesis 12:3b.

…”and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

Promise: All believers are blessed by Abraham’s faith that led to Christ.

Paul gives us additional information about the blessing to Abraham in Galatians 3:7-9. “Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.” Abraham was considered by God to be a man of faith as he answered God’s call and followed him to a new land. God considered Abraham’s faith and counted it to him as righteousness. Genesis 15:6 “Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.” Just as Abraham received righteousness through his faith in God so we too receive our righteousness though faith in Christ.

Knowing that we have to hear or see God’s truth to bring us to faith in Jesus, who do you have to thank for telling you about Jesus? Christianity is just one generation away from extinction as you cannot get to heaven on someone else’s faith. You need your own faith in Christ. Abraham was faithful to pass on his legacy of faith to his sons and daughters. Who do you need to tell about Jesus today so that the gospel message can live on?

What do we know from this verse: God has a plan of salvation for all believers, God intends for us to pass it on to the next generation until Christ returns, Abraham’s faith had an effect on all believers.

Lenten Reflections: What is my legacy of faith? Whom have I told? Who do I need to tell about Jesus?

Think about God’s precious blessing though Christ. Pray for those who brought you to faith and for those who do not yet know Him.

You Can Be Special to Someone This Week!

Our story continues with Mary quickly traveling to the hill country after her encounter with the angel Gabriel to stay with Elizabeth and Zechariah. Luke 1:39-45

39 A few days later Mary hurried to the hill country of Judea, to the town 40 where Zechariah lived. She entered the house and greeted Elizabeth. 41 At the sound of Mary’s greeting, Elizabeth’s child leaped within her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 Elizabeth gave a glad cry and exclaimed to Mary, “God has blessed you above all women, and your child is blessed. 43 Why am I so honored, that the mother of my Lord should visit me? 44 When I heard your greeting, the baby in my womb jumped for joy. 45 You are blessed because you believed that the Lord would do what he said.”

I love this homey scene with the cousins embracing the mission God has given to each of them and encouraging one another. Elizabeth was much older than Mary, perhaps more like a grandmother by age. Her wisdom and joy in greeting Mary is apparent. She knows the child Mary is to bare is to be God’s child and her own child jumps in recognition of the spirit within Mary’s womb. Elizabeth acknowledges Mary place in God’s plan and what a favored relationship that will be. She also acknowledged as fact the blessing that comes through faith. I’m sure her wisdom and joy was an encouragement to young Mary.

What do we learn about God from this family scene? God desires that we be encouraged in our walk with Him. He places special people in our lives that will help us grow in our faith. God orchestrates events and people so that we are supported in our times of need. Mary needed the support of Elizabeth and Zachariah- their wisdom and faith as she prepared for her life as Josephs’ wife and Jesus’ mother. God also blesses us because of our faith in Him. His grace is beyond measure and open to all who believe.

Who do you have in your life right now that you can support and encourage? Perhaps you are a mentor or a friend that can lend support to someone spiritually, monetarily, physically or emotionally. I see Mary receiving all those from Elizabeth and Zachariah. Can you be that support for someone this week?

Advent Brings Wonderment at the Kindness of God

Luke 1:23-25 tells of mute Zechariah going home and barren aged Elizabeth becoming pregnant just as God had said. “When Zechariah’s week of service in the Temple was over, he returned home. 24 Soon afterward his wife, Elizabeth, became pregnant and went into seclusion for five months. 25 “How kind the Lord is!” she exclaimed. “He has taken away my disgrace of having no children.”

Here are a couple of personal connections with these verses: Elizabeth remained in seclusion for 5 month and she had an amazing attitude towards God. It is not known why she kept her pregnancy a secret. It could have been because of her advanced age, the possibility of a miscarriage or perhaps it was time for her to adjust to this miracle happening to her. Elizabeth’s attitude proclaims a wonderment at God’s work in her. Since barrenness was consider a disgrace in their society, her heart overflowed with love and gratitude towards God for lifting this ‘curse’ from her.

How quickly do you to proclaim wonderment at God’s work in your life? I find it takes me a bit of time to process what has happened and to see God’s hand in my life. I can truly identify with Elizabeth and her process time. Like Elizabeth, I waited years for a child and God provided my sweet Elizabeth from a far away country. It took time to process that the adoption was really going to go through, that my child of promise was really coming and that I was going to be a mother. Once I realized it was really happening, I was filled with wonder at God’s answer to my long awaited prayer. I’m sure that Elizabeth had similar thoughts and concerns about her ability to be a mom and to raise her child as God wanted. I’m sure she never doubted her ability to love this new life within her! Her expressions of love and wonder at God choosing her to be a mother and the lifting of her disgrace was cause for her exclamation in scripture, “How kind the Lord is!” I totally get her words as that is exactly how I felt. I felt touched and so loved by God that He kindly sent Elizabeth to me. I also identified with her ‘lifting of disgrace’ for not having children. I know it was much more intensified in her day but I was constantly asked, “When are you going to have children?” I wanted children, so the words stung and stayed with me. Somehow, it is expected that once married you will have children, but as in Elizabeth and my case God had a plan for us to see the wonderment of God in our lives. God’s timing was not our timing, but His will was accomplished. John was born to Elizabeth and Zachariah and Elizabeth was brought home to us. “How kind God was!” to bring Elizabeth into our home! It was and is cause for rejoicing at the power and might of God.

May you see God’s hand in your life today and exclaim along with us, “How kind God is!”
