Zechariah ‘Sings’ of Provider God!

Zechariah was overcome by the power of God when he ‘sang’ forth these prophetic words. Only God knows the future and these words about John and the coming Messiah are amazing.

Luke 1:76-80 “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;
    for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,
77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people
    in the forgiveness of their sins,
78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
    whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high
79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
    to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

When I mediated on these words, I was overwhelmed by God’s gracious provision for us. He provided John to announce the coming Messiah. It had been 400 years since the last prophet Malachi had delivered a message to God’s people. They were hungry for word from God and needed to be turned back and tuned towards Him! The Messiah to come would bring salvation, forgiveness of sin, and light to a dark world. He would show God’s tender mercy towards His children by shining light on their pathways and guiding them in the way of peace. What a wonderful provider God is!!

God is our Provider. God provides for every creature He has made. He feeds the birds and gives us our daily bread. God gives us strength and goodness through the power of His indwelling Holy Spirit to enable us to live for Him. Isaiah 40:29 “He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. I love Romans 8:28 and the truth I can claim about His power of goodness in my life. “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” He provides a way out of temptation and protects us from evil. 1 Corinthians 10:13 is a key verse to claim,“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” David knew the protection of God first hand as he claimed it in Psalm 140:1-2 “Deliver me, O Lord, from evil men; preserve me from violent men 2 who plan evil things in their heart and stir up wars continually.” God provides salvation through our faith in Jesus and He assures us that we cannot be snatched away from Him!! John 10:28“I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.” God’s provision of His Son was His greatest gift to us. Paul describes this gift in 2 Corinthians 9:15“Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!

When you look at all these provisions past and future, you can only marvel at the power and love of God!

He Has Us Covered!!

This is a precious promise from Isaiah that we can claim over our lives and depend upon. Isaiah 51:15-16

I am the Lord your God,
    who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
    the Lord of hosts is his name.
16 And I have put my words in your mouth
    and covered you in the shadow of my hand,
establishing the heavens
    and laying the foundations of the earth,
    and saying to Zion, ‘You are my people.’”

Promise: God promises to give me His words and protect me with the shadow of His hand.

Isaiah tells us that God is creator as He has established the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth. The waves, sky, sun, etc are all His. We are part of His creation established by Him. He has promised to cover and protect me with the shadow of His hand and give me the words I need when speaking about Him. I do not need to be afraid to tell others about Jesus as He will protect me because I belong to Him! Scripture often refers to the shadow of God’s wings as a place of safety. Psalm 91:1-2 “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Anyplace guarded by God is safe for us!

What we can know from these verses: God is creator and knows His creation personally, God is Almighty and there is none greater than Him, God desires to use me for His work, God chose me to belong to Him.

Lenten Reflections: Am I actively praying for God’s protection and guidance in my life? Where has God given me opportunities to speak about Him?

I love to think of God’s protective hand over my life and His words guiding me as I speak about Him. It makes me feel loved and valued. Because Christ died on the cross and rose from the dead, I can trust that God is active in my life and will provide me with opportunities to speak out for Him. Thank you Jesus for your abiding faith and protection of me.

Images of a Protecting, Saving God

Psalm 91 is often referred to the SOS psalm. God’s love and protection is clearly stated and one can be assured that they can call upon the Lord for help.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.” God promises shelter and protection for those who abide in Him.

3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
    and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his pinions,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
5 You will not fear the terror of the night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
    nor the destruction that wastes at noonday. The images of protection by God’s wings and our not needing to live fearfully are powerful. They are very reassuring!

7 A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
8 You will only look with your eyes
    and see the recompense of the wicked. God will protect you!

9 Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place—
    the Most High, who is my refuge—
10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
    no plague come near your tent. Protection comes from abiding in the Lord.

11 For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
    lest you strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the adder;
    the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot. He has sent angels to guard our way.

14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
    I will protect him, because he knows my name.
15 When he calls to me, I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble;
    I will rescue him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.” My salvation is secure in Him from now throughout eternity!

Because Christ died on the cross and rose from the dead, I can be assured of God’s protection and my eternal salvation is secure. Thank you Jesus. Hebrews 5:8-9 “Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. 9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,“

Knowing God’s Character is Essential

Psalm 18 is rich and we’ll spend 2 days here. Psalm 18:1-6 show us David’s dependence upon God and how God always responds to those who love Him. Here it is in the New Living Translation:

I love you, Lord;
    you are my strength.
2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior;
    my God is my rock, in whom I find protection.
He is my shield, the power that saves me,
    and my place of safety.
3 I called on the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
    and he saved me from my enemies.

What does David know about God? He is the one who gives him strength, stability, salvation, protection, safety, and is totally worthy of praise!

4 The ropes of death entangled me;
    floods of destruction swept over me.
5 The grave wrapped its ropes around me;
    death laid a trap in my path.
6 But in my distress I cried out to the Lord;
    yes, I prayed to my God for help.
He heard me from his sanctuary;
    my cry to him reached his ears.

David continues and tells us God has untangled very difficult situations for him, kept him from natural disasters and mortal enemies, and God has heard his prayers. God is accessible to David as his cries reach up to the heavens.

Looking at David’s list of the things he knows about God, I ask myself do I know those things too? Through faith in Jesus, I have all of that and more, but am I realizing it in my life? Do I depend upon God for strength when times are hard or when I’m hurting? Is my faith in Jesus a stabilizing factor in my life? If not, how do I make it so? Colossians 2:6-7 tells us it is all dependent upon Christ, “ So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” Is Christ my savior? Have I done as Romans 10:9-10 says? “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Be assured it will work as verse 13 goes on to say, “ for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Do I call on God for protection? Simple things like praying before I travel or during my travels, as I go to sleep at night, or as I’m are off to work. God can and will be with me 24/7 so do I acknowledge this and pray for protection? If disaster should come am I living assured that He will be there? How about prayer for difficult circumstances or problems? God can and will listen to my cries for help and the anguish of my soul. I may see his answer in ways of protection, healing, encouragement, comfort, uplifting, fellowship, etc. His answers are not always immediate but if it is in His will the answer will come. That calls for patience, and you can hear David’s anguish as he waits for God’s response. And yet, he does not lose hope as He knows the nature of God.

Because Christ died on the cross and rose from the dead, I can know God and depend upon His character. Thank you Jesus for the knowledge of God’s faithfulness and His indwelling Holy Spirit that confirms these truths within my being. Romans 8:16 “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” Praise God!
