Sovereign, Most High God

One of the lifechanging names of God for me was El Elyon or The Most High God, Sovereign God. I did not really grasp the Sovereignty of God until I read the Old Testament. Woven in the stories of their trials, tribulations and rebellions against God, I saw how God watched over all and was always in control, Sovereign. How do we know that God is always in control? Scripture gives us many examples so that we can know it is a truth about God’s nature and character. It is a truth we cand depend upon.

To start us off, I want to use Psalm 91:1-2. Here the Psalmist points us to the Most High God who is our protector as He holds us within His sheltered wings! “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

The Kings of Judah were not all followers of the Most High God but here are the prayers of David, Solomon and Josephat which point us towards the Most High Sovereign God. King David’s prayer before the assembled Israelites at the dedication of Solomon as king. 1 Chronicles 29:10-13 “ Therefore David blessed the Lord in the presence of all the assembly. And David said: “Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. 11 Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. 12 Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. 13 And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.” David recognized the true power and majesty of God and how all belongs to Him.

Solomon prayed before after bringing the ark into the temple. 1 Kings 8:21-23 “Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel and spread out his hands toward heaven, 23 and said, “O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and showing steadfast love to your servants who walk before you with all their heart;” I love the acknowledgement of God’s sovereign control of all above and on and under the earth, and His steadfast love for those who follow Him.

Here King Jehoshaphat prayed before a battle and beseeched God to give them victory. 2 Chronicles 20:5-6 “And Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord, before the new court, 6 and said, “O Lord, God of our fathers, are you not God in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. In your hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand you.” He knew that if God was with them they could not be defeated! He knew that God was bigger than their enemies and was in control.

Isaiah 45:7 speaks of God revealing Himself and His sovereignty, “I form light and create darkness;
    I make well-being and create calamity;  I am the Lord, who does all these things.”

Jesus also reveals God’s sovereignty in regard to those who follow Him. John 10:27-29 “ My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.” I love these verses and take great comfort in know that God has me and no one or nothing can take me away from Sovereign God.

Paul makes a plea to the Athenians in his speech to their ‘unknown’ God in Acts 17:24-27 “ The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. 26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us,” They were not aware of Jesus and Paul was making him known to them in a very clever way so that they would see the truth of Sovereign God.

There are so many wonderful scriptures that describe the truth of our Sovereign God. Because Christ died on the cross and rose from the dead, I can call upon Sovereign God praising Him for his provision, protection and steadfast love towards me.

Mary Praises Continue

Mary’s Song of praise continues in Luke 1:46-49 as she looks to God in praise speaking of God’s care for Israel. Mary recognizes the power of God and His Sovereign nature.

Luke 1:46-49 “And his mercy is for those who fear him
    from generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with his arm;
    he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;
52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones
    and exalted those of humble estate;
53 he has filled the hungry with good things,
    and the rich he has sent away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
    in remembrance of his mercy,
55 as he spoke to our fathers,
    to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”

Only a sovereign God could show His strength and power from generation to generation. He has moved kings and kingdoms, given good things, been merciful to his people and interacted personally with Abraham. Being Sovereign means God controls all things. There is nothing outside of God’s wise control, even to the timing for each individual. What God plans happens. When God allows evil, we can trust He has planned to use it for His people’s good and His glory. God had perfect timing for His Son to come the first time and knows the perfect time for His return. All God has planned will come to pass as He alone has the power to make it happen. His will cannot be thwarted.

Mary knew this about God. She has seen His strength and power in Isabel’s history. She would have known about Moses, the escape from Egypt after the 10 plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, the walls of Jericho falling down to the trumpet of God, their first king Saul and his hatred for beloved king David, their constant idol worship which led them into captivity for 70 years and the return as God promised. Mary had heard these stories read in the temple and knew the power of Almighty God to move in history. She knew God to be merciful and caring. She knew He was sovereign over all things.

What do you know about God? Can you talk about God’s character and how you have seen Him in your life? Mary knew first hand that God was real and she marveled that God had chosen her. I too marvel at how God uses individuals to accomplish His work. Each of us is important to God and can be a part of His work. Paul spoke of the importance of each believer in Romans 12:4-6a “For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us,” In Christ we are all part of Him and have a purpose for His work and for supporting other believers. We are all gifted by God to help lift up, encourage and build up one another. Who do you need to encourage today? Can you send an email, a card or call with a word to show you care? Be open to God, like Mary, and look expectantly for ways God will use you to show the love of Jesus to the world.

Creation Testifies to God

I love Psalm 19 and it’s message about God’s glory and the majesty of His Creation. Both creation and His Word testify to who God is and His sovereignty. Today we’ll concentrate on Psalm 19:1-4.

The heavens declare the glory of God,
    and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
2 Day to day pours out speech,
    and night to night reveals knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words,
    whose voice is not heard.
4 Their voice goes out through all the earth,
    and their words to the end of the world.
In them he has set a tent for the sun,

Verses 1 and 2 speak of the unrelenting witness of creation to God’s power, might and majesty. Majesty is defined as grandeur, greatness, authority , sovereignty and is associated with a royal personage. When one looks a beautiful sunset, the Grand Canyon, a raging river or the oceans waves, you are witnessing the greatness of God and His power to create such things. They bear witness to Him and His awesome power. They continue to witness of Him night and day year after year reminding us of the eternality of God. No language is needed to see these truths as they do not speak in words but in sights, sounds, smells and touch. All people of the earth can see and experience the power of God and the wonder of His creation. They can also see God’s faithfulness to His creation as each day leads to the next and the seasons unfold annually.

The Apostle Paul used verse 4 when preaching in Rome. He was making a case for preaching the gospel to those who have never heard of Jesus or God and his conclusion is in Romans 10:17 “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” Then Paul uses verse 4. “But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have, for “Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.” What I think he was saying is that man is without excuse. They many not have heard the gospel preached and yet they know there is God because all creation testifies to His power, might and being. If they missed it, they were not looking. Such was the case with the Israelites as God was there holding out His hand, speaking to them, wooing them through creation, His Word and His prophets.

What about you? Are you looking for God? Are you listening for His voice each day? He is there just as the sun rises and sets, God is there. Will you open yourself to look and listen?

Because Christ died on the cross and rose from the dead, we can clearly see God in Jesus the Son. We don’t have to just look at creation as we have the indwelling Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus to point us to God. Thankfully we have Jesus, the Holy Spirit, His Word and all creation to witness to us about God! Thanks you God for making yourself known to me.

Realigned Focus during Adversity

How do you deal with Nay Sayers or those that would desire to cast doubt on your faith? Believe it or not, the psalmist David had the same issues when he wrote Psalm 3. He did not want to listen his many foes who were telling him God was not going to rescue him or do anything to help him solve his problems. This was written when he was struggling with his son Absalom who was trying to take over David’s throne and kill him. David talked to the Lord about this, laying it before Him. Then, he set about remembering the times God had rescued him!

O Lord, I have so many enemies;
    so many are against me.
2 So many are saying,
    “God will never rescue him!” Interlude

3 But you, O Lord, are a shield around me;
    you are my glory, the one who holds my head high.
4 I cried out to the Lord,
    and he answered me from his holy mountain. Interlude

5 I lay down and slept,
    yet I woke up in safety,
    for the Lord was watching over me.
6 I am not afraid of ten thousand enemies
    who surround me on every side.

7 Arise, O Lord!
    Rescue me, my God!
Slap all my enemies in the face!
    Shatter the teeth of the wicked!
8 Victory comes from you, O Lord.
    May you bless your people. Interlude

David’s conclusion, after remembering who God is and what He had done for him during his lifetime, was that God holds the victory. Victory comes from Him. He can defeat any foe as He is sovereign. David was reminded that God will bring victory and blessing.

David is our example for how to react to those who would discourage our faith saying it is worthless, that God will not help us. We too can change our focus from the Nay Sayers to Jesus. The right perspective will bring us to Jesus. Because Christ died on the cross and rose from the dead, we have a permanent advocate in Jesus. He intercedes for us and sent the Holy Spirit to comfort and guide us. Romans 8:27 “And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” John 14:26 “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” Focusing on Jesus will put everything in perspective as it did for King David.

Let thanks be on you tongue and praises in your heart as you look to Jesus. Thank you Jesus.

1st Sunday of Lent, 2022

As you attend church today, meditate on the first 6 verses of Psalm 139. They are precious and reveal much about who we are and who God is. He is to be praised.

You have searched me, Lord,
    and you know me.
2 You know when I sit and when I rise;
    you perceive my thoughts from afar.
3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
    you are familiar with all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue
    you, Lord, know it completely.
5 You hem me in behind and before,
    and you lay your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
    too lofty for me to attain.

May you realize today that God knows you, all about you. Can you even imagine such knowledge? When you couple Psalm 139 with Nahum 1:9 The Lord is good,
    a refuge in times of trouble.
He cares for those who trust in him,

and Psalm 23:1-3 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2     He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3     he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
    for his name’s sake.

you get a picture of our loving God who knows and cares for YOU.
