As I was writing Bible Study discussion questions this morning to go with my book Promises for Dynamic Living, I was meditating on Matthew 6:19-21. “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” I was thinking about what I value in life and how that is reflected in my life. I thought about my own heart attitudes towards God and questioned what in my life reflects godly purpose. As I continued to meditate, I looked up the related verses. 1Timothy 6:19 stood out to me. “In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” How am I storing up treasures that God has for me from His Word so I have a firm foundation? How am I taking hold of the life that is truly life? Am I sold out for God, working and thinking about how to serve Him each day or am I just trying to serve myself then God? Is the life I am living- truly living for God?
Reflecting on our purpose, attitudes and actions in life are necessary to grasp who we are and where we want to be going with our life. A life lead by God, striving to accomplish His purposes for our life is a true life. Are you taking hold of that life for yourself? Meditate on these verses, pray and seek God’s guidance. He will reveal His pathway and direction for your life and give you peace in and through the process!
Blessings as you meditate and pray for godly direction,
Linda

What? The arrival of the promised power from heaven that would empower them to be witnesses in Jerusalem, all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
Acts 2:2-4 describes to us vividly the arrival of the Holy Spirit. “Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” Peter stood and preached to the gathered crowd and told them that this outpouring from heaven was from God. He quoted the Old Testament prophet Joel in Acts 2:17 “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.” The arrival of the Holy Spirit was dramatic- tongues of fire- and noisy- as a strong wind and filled with many languages. It was a surprise arrival yet it had been expected. Jesus told them to go and wait, so they knew something or someone was coming. In John 15 verses 15-17, 25-26, Jesus had promised them the Holy Spirit would come. “If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever-the Spirit of truth. And all this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” Luke 24:48-49 “Your are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
Matthew 8:26 “And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.” Let Jesus bring calm into your life today. What ever your storms, Jesus is greater than anything you face. Let Jesus be your answer just as He was for the disciples that night on the Sea of Galilee. Why not pray right now and ask Him to calm you and give you direction? Jesus will answer as He is faithful.
The day of Christ’s Ascension has arrived. Jesus appeared many times to His followers in groups and to individuals before He returned to heaven. His return is recorded in Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24 and Acts 1:4-11. It was 40 days after His resurrection and they were gathered on the Mt of Olives. He gave them words that have become known as the Great Commission and told them not to leave Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit came. They would wait 9 more days for the Holy Spirit’s arrival on a day we know as Pentecost.
After Jesus’ resurrection, He appeared to individuals and groups both large and small. Those that He met individually seemed to need a special reassurance from their Savior. Luke 24:34 tells us that Jesus appeared to Peter, Mary Magdalene met him in the garden and mistook him for a gardener in John 20:14-18 and He came specifically to see Thomas in John 20: 26-29 and sometime later in Acts 9 Jesus met Paul on the Road to Damascus. In each case, Jesus met them with the assurance that He was the firm foundation of their faith and that He was real. Peter had denied knowing Jesus and needed to ask his forgiveness, Thomas doubted and needed to be assured of his resurrection, Mary was overcome with grief and needed to gain a heavenly perspective and see hope and Paul needed to be confronted in his unbelief.
