Obedience is one of those words and actions we like to think is just for children. We want our children to be obedient, follow the rules and grow up safe. We know that obedience goes hand in hand with respect. Do you ever think of obedience as applying to you? God’s Word has a lot to say about obedience in our Christian life.
In the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel, the priest Samuel was talking to King Saul and told him, “Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.” 1 Samuel 15:22. He was telling King Saul that God loved and desired his obedience over all his religious works and deeds. Jesus told his disciples in John 14:15 “If you love me, you will obey what I command.” and in 14:23 “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching.” Obedience is an expression of love and respect and God desires us to be obedient.
The Bible also tells us that obedience brings blessings into our lives. Jesus said in Luke 11:28 “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” Obedience will also result in our remaining in God’s love and having joy. John 15:10-11 “If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” Hebrews 5:8-9 adds that we learn from obedience and through Christ’s obedience on the cross we gained eternal life through faith in Him. Christ is our perfect example of obedience and a life lived with devotion and love to God. We are given several promises about living in obedience that are encouraging. 1 John 3:24 “Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.” The indwelling Holy Spirit we receive when we profess faith in Jesus-lives within us to testify to our love, life and obedience to Him. 1 John 5:3 “This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his command are not burdensome for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.” How wonderful is that! Loving God, obeying his Word brings us victory in Christ and is powerful enough to overcome the sin filled world we live in!
Obedience is key to living the Christian life with power and love. I pray that as you mediate on your need to be obedient to Christ, He will reveal what you need to do today to please Him.
Striving to live in obedience to Christ.
