To begin our Lenten focus on who I am because of Christ, I choose a perspective that is essential for all believers to know and internalize in their daily walk with Jesus.
Because I believe Christ died on the cross and rose from the dead, I am a child of God. The Bible is filled with references to God’s children, those who believe in Him. Let’s look at John 1:12-13 to see why. “ But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.” John specifically tells us that belief in Jesus gives us the right or privilege to become a child of God. It is a birth that comes from God. Why is this important? Just like in any household, being a child there gives one privileges or benefits that come from being your father’s child. You might have a room of your own, a pool to use, food to eat, a car to drive and receive the love of your parents and siblings. God’s family is like that too. We have His Spirit to indwell us, coming mansions in heaven, use of all God’s kingdom to speak of His love, provision of clothes, food and things we need in life, brothers and sisters in faith to share with and most importantly His love forever. What a great family!
As you begin your Lenten journey, think about being a child of God. Thank Jesus for providing the way for you to come into His family and enjoy the wonderful privileges that you have because of His sacrifice. Thank you Jesus.
Eternally grateful that I am His child.

As we center our thinking on Christ these next 40 days. I found this quote by Pope Francis and thought it was so insightful as to
Lent begins on Wednesday. If we were in New Orleans we would be celebrating during the Mardi Gras season awaiting tomorrow better known as ‘Fat Tuesday’. This is the biggest and last day of the festival. Why celebrate? Beginning in Medieval times people would celebrate by eating rich foods and drinking before the season of Lent that brought penance and fasting. Today I hear people say, “This is my last_____ for 6 weeks”. This could be chocolate, french fries, alcohol or anything else one feels would be a sacrifice to eliminate from their diet for the 6 weeks leading up to Easter. All of the ‘sacrifice’ points to the ultimate sacrifice that Christ made by dying on the cross for our sins.
It has been a month since I posted my blogs to begin our New Year with HOPE. I pray you had a good beginning to 2018. I had the privilege to travel to Thailand and Cambodia. It was an amazing trip and God was faithful to teach me as I traveled. I want to share a few reflections before we begin our Lenten journey on February 14th.
Cling to these verses as you walk forward this year. Claim their truths. What God promises, He delivers. God is ever faithful.
James 1:2-5 ”
Rejoicing in suffering takes purposeful thinking and faith,
As you begin this New Year, why not write this verse out and have it where you can see it each day? Let the truth of God’s promised provision sink into your heart. When God says, “I will”, He means it because God is truth (1 John 5:6) and does not lie. (Hebrews 6:18) What God says you can count on today and all the days this year. He won’t change His mind as God is immutable, unchanging. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8
So be encouraged today to keep on keeping on with doing good. God knows our struggles and desires that we have a persistent attitude towards life and serving others. Today live each moment looking for who God wants you to bless by being the very presence of God to them. Reflect Jesus and do good for Him with a renewed attitude.
What wonderful promises to encourage and keep us going when things get hard! Have you ever thought about God rejoicing and singing over you? What have you done for Him that He would be rejoicing about? God specifically tells us to proclaim the gospel, good news, about Jesus so others can know His love and redemption. He calls us to serve and love others in His name-having the motivating factor in that love coming from God. In John 14:23 “Jesus answered him,
What about calming you with His love? Has that ever happened to you? I like to think of this as calming my spirit as I struggle with a difficult situation, bringing peace in the midst of chaos, bringing hope when I’m discouraged. The Holy Spirit can touch us personally as He dwells within or He may send someone else with a word of encouragement or a kind deed. God promises in this verse that Jesus is with us and that He will save us. Jesus came to save- let Him save you. Accepting His love and redemption into our lives is a one time event but then He continues to live within us and save us to a greater extent with each day. The fancy word for this is sanctification, the growing and developing in Christ. Let Him work within you each day and mold and shape you into who He wants you to be.
I pray that as you start 2018 you have Hope in your heart, assurance of God’s unending love and mercy and are comforted knowing He will be your strength and guide. Let the New Year begin remembering Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the
